5-Minute Cranberry Pear Breakfast Bowl

5-Minute Cranberry Pear Breakfast Bowl

Mornings are busy! Anytime I can crank out a healthy, filling breakfast in under 10 minutes is a great day in my book! My husband and I always eat breakfast but we haven’t quite figured out how to leave ourselves enough time to sit down and eat at the table together in the hustle and bustle of getting ready. Getting him to the train station on time is our top priority, so he generally eats breakfast in the car while I drive, meaning that whatever I make for breakfast needs to be safe for him to eat in a moving vehicle! (Don’t worry, I eat my breakfast when I get back home from driving him!)

This morning we didn’t have any leftovers in the fridge to repurpose into breakfast, we’re out of both cottage cheese AND greek yogurt (two breakfast staples for us) and we have exactly one lonely egg in the house, so all my usual go-to low carb breakfast ideas were off the table. Thankfully I had baked a tray of crispy turkey bacon last night (we like having cold bacon as a quick protein with breakfast through the week), but I needed something more substantial to serve alongside the bacon.

Enter hemp hearts to save the day!! Before we started doing low-carb more seriously, steel cut oatmeal was a favourite breakfast option (so warm and filling, so many mix-ins, so many options!) but although they’re delicious, oats are not exactly low in carbs.  Today I improvised and used hemp hearts instead (aka hemp seeds) to make a sort of pseudo “oatmeal” with no added sweeteners, no dairy and no grains, and it literally came together in about 5 minutes! Plus it’s super yummy! Breakfast win!

before stirring…….

….after stirring! ready to eat!

Let me know if you try it! What are some of your favourite dried & fresh fruit combinations?

5-Minute Cranberry Pear Breakfast Bowl

A super easy, tasty vegan breakfast that's high in protein and healthy fats but low in carbs!

Cuisine grain-free, low-carb, vegan
Prep Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes
Servings 1 person

  • 1/3 cup hemp hearts (aka hemp seeds) organic if possible
  • 1 Tbsp ground chia seeds
  • 10 dried, unsweetened cranberries (or juice-sweetened) can sub raisins
  • 2/3 cup d'Anjou pear, diced
  • 1/4 or 1/2 cup boiling water (or cold water if you prefer) can sub nut milk for a creamier "oatmeal" feel

  1. Add all ingredients except water into a bowl.

  2. Pour boiling water on top and stir to combine (1/4 cup if you don't like very watery oatmeal, 1/2 cup if you like it a bit more liquidy). Enjoy!

Recipe Notes

If you want to mix it up, you can add 1 Tbsp of pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds for some added crunch. You can also switch the dried fruit to any dried fruit you like, and you can swap the pear for any fresh fruit you have on hand!

If you really want to get fancy, use the boiling water to make tea, then pour the steeped tea over the other ingredients and enjoy your infused breakfast bowl! (Earl Grey or Vanilla Rooibos tea works especially well for this, but you could use any fragrant tea you like!)
